Cancer in Cavies

Question
Hi,
Short question .
Why do Cavies develop cancer?
We have lost one to cancer - A American smooth coat and now another has developed what they think is benign cancer of the lymph/ nipple area.
I love these little animals and try to help them but I don't know if I can take another loss.
Thanks for your help.
Sincerely, Jeff

Answer
Jeff -

Well, the short answer to that question is .. the same reasons people do.  Guinea pigs are remarkably like people, which is why they are used so often in scientific testing.  Some cancers are predictable, like if you smoke, you're more likely to get lung cancer, but some you cannot predict, like leukemia.

It sounds to me like you've just had remarkably bad fortune in your animals.  In all my years of guinea pigs, I've only lost one to cancer.  If you really love working with them, just keep trying.  Eventually one will work out.

I hope this brings you some comfort.  Good luck with your current animal.
