Question
Hi, I'm so stressed out at the min, my female guinea pig somehow found a way into the mail guinea run area and is now heavily pregnant.  I'm really worried because and the net there are a lot of stories about a big chance of her an babies dying due to the pelvic bone closing.  Is this true and if so what should I do?  thanks sue

Answer
If she has never before had babies her pelvic bones are fused, but I have had several older rescues give birth before and the babies and mother have lived. I have also had 3 mothers die during birth and all of their babies. The best thing to do is make sure the mother gets the right food and plenty of water, also line up a vet in case necessary for a C-section. Also track the date she is due is you by any chance know, I have noticed the big killer of older pregnant pigs is waiting too long to give birth, then the babies are too big, so try to contact a vet after 68 days of conception to have labor induced if she hasn't given birth. I also have lots of pregnancy information on my website http://woopets.bravehost.com under guinea pig info.
