Will my adoptees ever get used to me?

Question
Hello Sam, you've helped me recently re: whether to adopt guinea pigs or not because we also share our house with 37 rescue bunnies.  Your answer was what I wanted to hear so yes, we adopted two 5-6 mo. old boars who've been together since very young.

I made these 2 a pen like I do with my bunnies, and their pen is just under 5 ft. long x just over 2 ft. wide.  We've had them for almost 3 wks. and they're adjusting well except still do not want to be picked up by me.

The more dominant one will come and sniff my finger but will take off and the other one is even more skittish.  They come out of their pen quite a few times a day just like my bunnies but not at the same time of course.  They are very comical to watch!  We have them in the front room, so they're right with us.

I feed them veggies, and hay which is in their pen constantly.  They also get pellets at night.  They have a couple of hidey houses made from corrugated boxes too.

I have picked them up at times but not everyday.  When I do, they squeal after pathetically hiding in the corner of their pen chattering and acting like I'm going to seriously harm them.  It's so different from bunnies of course even my ones with behaviourial problems.

I love these boys and will work with them but do you have any suggestions?  I hope they're not too old already to not want me to touch them.

Also, for the future, do you think I'd be able to add another pair of boars, younger ones perhaps?  I will not be bringing any females into the house.  If so, how much bigger do I need to make their pen?

Thank you for your patience with my loonnnngggg letter!

Answer
its okay always good to hear from you, well for starters you have got everything right, guinea pigs are skittish by nature, rabbits always seem really chilled and nosey by comparison. it is never too late to stop them being skittish and scared, though remember they are a skittish animal. the best thing is at night time have them on your lap and groom them for about fifteen minutes each day, evantually they will get used to you, it just takes time.
well for a cage you are supposed to try and keep it around 7.5 feet to 2 feet (if you do this in cubes grids approximatley six grids to two grids, this is suitable for two pigs, but i understand your bunny's and the like limit practical size, for four you would need about 13 feet. you can add boars later but it is harder, boars are always a little more awkward them sows and an older boar tends to e more awkward still, if you do have more boars later then the cage will need to be larger, probably fifteen feet (though the larger the better, at least at first with lots of hiding places. other than that i recommend the usual bonding methods and suggest that you get young boars (just weaned)to introduce.

best of luck
