guinea pig exercise

We just recently got our first guinea pig.  I have read that it is important that they get exercise.  However, when we take him out first of all he doesn't want to be held.  If we let him run in an area he pees and poops all over.  He even pees on us when holding him.  I'm ready to take him back.  Any advice?

Please dont take him back :(

You have to bare in mind that he will likely be very nervous in his new environment hence the peeing. Over time he will nibble you or your clothes when he needs a pee.

In terms of pooping, all piggies poop all over but seeing as they are small dry torpedo shaped things they are easy to pick/hoover up.
