Can I shave my guinea pigs hair

Question
Hi,
I have a guinea pig with long hair. When I bought the pig, I was told it would be a short hair (good for my gf allergies), it turned out to be long hair and I love it all the same.

I do give it the occasional haircut with scissors, but recently I bought a razor kit for a dog (small razor with multiple guards).

Can I use the razor to shave its hair a bit, or should I stay away?

Thanks!

Answer
Hi Jordan.  I would be concerned with shaving your guinea pig's hair if it were to be cut very short to the body as it is not naturally a short haired pig, and as such your pig may feel a little strange or even not as warm.  It may just be an idea to cut the hair back into layers, say an inch of hair at each length, and cut the last length so it skirts the body to the foot of your pig so he's not walking on it.  This can also help keep the hair cleaner and tidier, thus maintaining his health and wellbeing.

I hope this helps you a bit!
