Introducing a new male...

Question
We adopted a male guinea pig from a shelter two weeks ago. He is pretty big, but we do not know his age. He seemed pretty happy with us (he has been squealing in delight when we come to the cage, or bring him his food) but we didn't want him to be alone, so we got a little one from a breeder today. The new one is fresh away from mom. They have been doing the chasing and pushing routine, and when I gave them fresh hay and just watched them for a while, I heard the disting teeth chattering sound for the first time. It went on for about a minute, and then stopped. I know this is not a good thing, but was told that as long as it stops, and doesn't lead to biting, that I should not interfere. Now since then they have been chasing each other around, making this growly purring sound, and taking turns on controling the food. I feel horrible, like we have made our older one unhappy. I was wondering how long this behavior will last until they finally settle down? Thank you so much in advance, and sorry that this is so long....

Answer
Hi Melanie

You are exactly right, the behaviour you describe is the two pigs deciding who is boss. You are also right to say to let them get on with it unless fighting occurs. However, I would say that you should monitor their behaviour as much as possible to be on the safe side.

I have been through this process and usually find that things settle down within a couple of days, and provided they do get on eventually, the older pig will be happier in the long run with another pig as company.

I hope that helps.
