Question
1 out of my 7 guinea pigs has been having a hair problem. Hes young(about 5 months) and i just breed him with one of my other young sows. I noticed he was itching alot and then his hair started falling out around his neck and chest with all these scaby cuts.(i did seperate him from the rest) Ive been treating him for mites or lice but it hasnt been working.  he gets special breeding formual for guinea Pigs (mazuri) so i would think he has enough vitamins but i just cant figure out what is wrong. i want to do something before he goes bald!

Answer
Hey Amber, I had the same problem with my Guinea Pig, he was loosing hair and we were really worried. We went to the pet store and they told us it was probably mites so we got a spray that you can buy @ your local pet store and it didn't work. We took him to the vet and the took skin samples and then diagnoised that he did in fact have mites. He had to have 2 shots and then he got better. I would suggest going to the vet to be on the safe side, but I am sure it's either mites or dry skin.  The reason your Gp has those scaby cuts is because Gp's bite so hard to relieve the itch that they make themselves bleed and then it dries into a cut. I don't think it has anything to do with viatmins because He sounds fine from what it seems. In conclusion take him to the vet to be on the safe side. If you cannot take him to the vet, go to the pet store and let them give you something that might work, it just depends on what level of mites your piggie has. Let me know what happens, and I hope he doesn't go bald! I know mine did(alomst) and everyone laughed at him..... Thanks for the Question and please Rate me. thanks :) have a good 4th of July.
