Adding another guinea-pig

Question
Hello

I have two eight week old male guinea-pigs, could I add another eight week old male without them fighting?

Answer
Hello and thanks for asking a question.

If you currently have two males that get along together, great! There is usually the instinct among males to fight if they are unaltered but this can be supressed if they do not have contact with unaltered females. Two or more females are actually known to get along better. You should always have more than one guinea pig unless you can spend a great deal of time with a solo GP.

Putting another male that has not had contact with a female could work. What I would do is place the new male in a seperate cage but close to the two others. You can get them used to each other, mingle their scents and see how they react. After a few days, put them all together and see what happens. Do not leave them alone though and at the first sign of trouble remove the new male and try again later.

GPs do not usually fight to the death though a GP can be hurt or mentally annoyed by another "alpha" male.

Hope this helped you, please rate me.

Good Luck!
