Bodily fluid

Question
I have two guinea pigs, one is a male about a year old, and the other is a female about 12 weeks old.  They live in separate cages but I bring them out to play on the floor each day.  The female is happy to run round and play while the male is excited there is a female around.  He keeps rubbing his grease gland across the floor and occasionally tries to mount her and I separate them immediately.  Sometimes he leaves a fluid on her coat and I'm wondering if this is his sperm or if it is his grease?  Can someone advise what it is as I don't want her to become pregnant at such a young age as I know it can cause problems.

Answer
HeY Ian,

The fluid, as you say, could be one of two things. One, iot could be the grease he's producing, to out his scent on her. However, if he's mounting her, it is also VERY likely to be the sperm.

My advise is never, ever let them play on the floor together, as even a second or two of munting can make your female pregnant. Piggies become seually mature at 10 weeks old and she could become pregnant, and this could cause her nourishment problems, as she's so young and fragile.

Plus, if your male keeps gettin excited like this, and especially if he's 'mounting' her, he will eventually become territorial and very violent due to all of the hormones.

Keep them seperate at all times, and wash your hands before handling the make if you've jst handled the female, to get her scent off of you.

If you desperately want ot keep them together, then get the male neutered. This way they may even be able to live together, and your piggy wouldn;t go through the trauma of a young birth.

I hope I was able to help!
