-----Question-----
my guinea pig has blackish gunk on one side of his mouth. he acts normally, eats normally and everything, and his diet is pretty good too. some times i pull the black stuff off, and he lets me, but then it comes back
what is it and what should i do?

Hello Harshita,

It sounds like it may be Cheilitis. I found a site with pictures for you to compare to your piggy. He should see a vet to find out if it's bacterial or fungal. The vet should also be able to give you the proper medications for treatment. The website link I'm giving you actually has quite a bit of information about this illness on it. Good luck!

Hello Harshita,

No. Neosporin and other antibiotic ointments should not be used on piggies except under a vet's advisement or with EXTREME caution because if they lick it off, it can be fatal. And especially this close to the piggy's mouth, it's not advised.

Answer
Hello Harshita,

I recommend a vet visit. Piggy safe oral antibiotics are best. If this is not an option and if he will actually let you rub the meds into the sores, you can try the neosporin. Use a very small amount and rub it in. It will be safe as long as he doesn't ingest it, so it will need to be rubbed in. It would be a good idea to have someone help you. Apply this once a day until it goes away. Again though be very careful he doesn't ingest it (a tiny bit won't really hurt but too much will). If it doesn't go away with the neosporin, then the infection is probably fungal and will need a different medication. Good luck. Hopefully this will help.
