Question
I have a 8 month old guinea pig and he was always hyper and lively. Ive noticed him become really lazy. Im making sure that hes has water and food all the time. I clean his cage out once or twice a week. Its been three days sence i cleaned out his cage and i noticed that he hasnt really gone to the bathroom much. Now hes almost always sleeping. Do you know whats going on with him?

Answer
Hi Beth,

From what you have told me about your pig, I think there are a number of causes for him to change his behaviour.

If the change in behaviour - from hyper to lazy - was over the space of a few weeks, then I would suspect illness. The reduction in toileting is another cause for concern. The first thing I advise you do is get your piggy checked over at the vets - explain how his behaviour has changed so much, over what space of time, and how he doesn't seem to be peeing/pooping very much. Your vet will know what to look for and will ask you some more questions about his general care and so on.

If illness is not the cause for the change, your boar may be a bit lonely. Cavies really need to have at least one other friend as they are such social animals. The lethargic behaviour you desribe can indicate depression as a result of loneliness. Another boar, younger or older (but ideally NOT within 2 months of his own age, since he is at the end of puberty) or a spayed sow are your options. If he is in very good health and you have a good vet, you can ask about having him neutered so he can live with an intact girl without getting her pregnant.

Boredom is another factor. Try adding a variety of toys - toilet paper tubes, cardboard boxes, bird toys (the kind that hang down into the cage), soft teddies (remove all ribbons, strings, tassles, labels and loose features), tunnels (PVC piping (4" diameter) or Chubes from pet stores are good), cheap plastic steps, other hideys and blankets are all fun toys enjoyed by many piggies.

I would get some toys to put in the cage as soon as possible, make an appointment with your vet and then look into getting another pig - try from a rescue or shelter before et stores and breeders.

Best Wishes,

- Laura
