Question
Hi i'm Brooke and i have had a teddy bear hamster for 3 years, i want to know how to tell if he is healthy or not,all he does is sleep, and at night he only gets up for like 4 hours to eat, run, and drink. and more importantly,i have treats and the back gives servings for rabbits and chinchillas only,is it ok to feed him those,or should i toss them? And if you don't mind one more Q, i bought Ray Ray a bed, but he won't sleep in it, what should i get him?Oh sorry, one more, once he jumped out of my hand and fortunately i was putting him in his ball so he fell from the top of the ball to the bottom, he is fine isn't he?he didn't show any wierd behavior, he just started running in his big ball,i got him a ferret ball so he would have more room.

Answer
Your hamster sounds perfectly normal to me. Right now I have 2 hams, one who is very active, and one who sleeps for 80% of his day. Both are very healthy, and it is just personal preference. Hamsters are to sleep most of their day anyway and be up at night, your little one could be active more then you notice while you sleep. I would get hamster treats, ones for other animals have a different nutritional content, and could make your hammy sick or overweight. Hamsters may not always sleep where you want, I have a rocket ship for my girl to sleep in, but she sleeps behind it instead, again it is just personal preference, and you can't change your hamsters mind. Get a ball that fits your hamster correctly, a ferret ball is much too large and requires way more energy to move, which will tire out your hamster quickly.
