8 mo chihuahua / 1st heat

Question
My brother-in-law (try as he might) could not keep their 6 month male and 8 mo female chihuahua separate when she was in heat.  Last night, they locked but only for a minute... a douse of cold water ended that really quick. The 2 dogs are papered and completely unrelated so there were future plans to breed... just not this soon. Anyway, sister-in-law says a lock pretty much gaurantees a too-soon pregnancy.  She's ready to race off to the vet to terminate the pregnancy immediately.  I say, human and animal conception alike, there are no gaurantees.  Additionally, I think it's probably too soon for the vet to even do anything about it.

1. How soon can a vet detect (and/or terminate) a pregnancy?
2. Will termination of a pregnancy cause problems with carrying future pregnancies?

Answer
Hi Jo

It's important to allow dogs to finish the mating process once it happens.  A) you can seriously damage the male and B) you can traumatize the male and he will never breed again.

But that being said... it takes only one time and yes, the female could have taken.

The vet can terminate the pregnancy immediately, however, the down side of the "morning after" shot for females is that they have a higher chance of never conceiving again.

Good luck
