Question
We have a 7 year old female lemon beagle that we have had since she was 6 weeks old.  We have never had her fixed and she has had one litter of pups when she was 4 years old.  Currently we have fostered and adopted a male tri color who has now bred with her.  Is her age a problem with having a litter and how important should it be to keep her vet involved.  Her fist liter was 5 pups with no issues.  Thanks for any advice

Answer
Hi Jerry. Her age could be a problem. I'd keep in close contact with her vet through the whole thing, to be on the safe side. Her first litter happened when she was a lot younger. I'd make sure she got plenty of exercise, and do x-rays when she hits day 50. You may also want to talk to your vet about any health concerns she has right now, and figure out how to treat them. You can also ask if he thinks that she needs any supplements. Definitely, keep in close contact with her vet, and let him know when her labor starts just in case she needs a c-section.
