Jealous Hound/Grooming question

Question
I have a multipet household, two cats, two birds, a fish, a hamster, and a dog. The dog, a basset/beagle mix, was the third pet we got. First there was Tig, the old cat, then there was the hamster and finally there was the dog. Then the cat, birds and finally the fish. Anyway, if I call the cat, the dog comes and nudges my hand (I ignore him, of course). If I start to pet the cats or talk to the birds the dog, Joe, comes up next to me and if I dont pet him and I put the cat down, he wrestles with it. He's a highly jealous dog, I'm thinking about adopting an eight year old unneutered Yorkie male, and I dont want Joe going after him. Is there a way to solve this problem?
Also, he whines like a baby whenever I try to cut his nails. Tips?

Answer
Sorry, apparently you sent this question some time ago...however, I just got it!

There really is nothing you can do to prevent your dog from getting jealous over another pet. He has alot of competion for your attention with all the animals you have. I can't tell you to or not to get the yorkie. I dont' know how he would act with it. As far as his nails go,  thats a basset!  they hate having their nails done. You will never break him of the whining during that either.  He's a hound!
