Question
Dear Charlotte ,
I have a cavalier king charles spaniel, named Sean aged 3 years old , 2 siberian huskies , Amy aged 2 and Aplha aged 5 months . Sean's behaviour changes ever since the last accident when Amy had a fight with Sean and his left eye went blind . He suffered alot more since Amy gave birth to a new born pup, Alpha . Sean started to stay under the TV set and wouldn't come out even for a whole day . He takes whatever he sees and bring it under the TV set . He barks agressively whenever Amy or Alpha tries to get near him . His condition now getting worse. He would bark for no reasons and would stay in the room for the whole day. Whoever wanted to get into the room , he would bark or even try bite us. He would bark the whole day even no one tries to get in. He wouldn't eat his food until someone feed him. He pee everywhere he likes and have body odour. I hope you would reply me ASAP because he's behaviour is getting very very worse.

Answer
Hi Felicia;
I am so sorry your little one is having such a hard time.
When wes the last time he was checked by the Veterinarian?
The frequent peeing could be a bladder or kidney infection or other medicak disorder. i would have it checked right away if it has not been seen by a Vet.
The behavior problem is probably trauma from the attack.
Since he did suffer the loss of the eye, and all the pain and fear that went with the attack, showed him how vulnerable he is, so he sounds terrified to be put in that position again.
It goes deeper than normal fear, apparently.
Also the truma of losing the eye, would make him feel even more vulnerable.
It sounds like the attack caused major mental stress .Animals suffer nervous breakdowns and mentel illnesses, just like humans do.
This poor dog sounds like he is constantly in fear of his life.
One thing I think would help him with this is massage.
We think about massage as being beneficial to sore muscles and such, but animal massage can also be very hepful in dealing with mental problems, fears and such.
I have sured dogs from fear of thunderstorms. aggressive barking, aggressive behavior and a lot of other things besides relief fro pain from post surgery recovery, Arthritis and Hip Dysplasia.
Linda Tellington developed a method of animal massage that I use. I can't say enough about the benefits of doing this massage on your animals.
Animal massage is a little bit like the horse whispering you have heard of, a method of communicating with horses and other animals that the Native americans have used for centuries. It really does work.
Itis not hard to learn to do the massages, and you can order a video that shows you the actual massages for different things, and by watching the hands of the person doing the massage being placed, and working the massages, you learn in just a few minutes exactly how to do them for whatever problem you are adressing.
Go to this address and read about the massages and to order the video.

She had videao for massaging dogs, cats, horses and other animals.
The massages also boost the results you get with obedience training, by helping to calm the animal so they are  more easily communicated with, and in a relaxed frame to absorb more of what you are teaching them.
Speaking to him in a very gentle, soothing voice, and doing the massages from calming I feel would help him recover from this mental trauma.
Making a place for him where he can feel completely safe from attack from the other dogs, and he can feel totally secure is inportant.
Naturally he would feel more threatened since the arrival of a second dog. this is two now for him to fear.
this fear and trauma will only get worse, unless he is helped soon.
It sounds like he has had what would be diagnosed in humans as a Nervous Breakdown.
By all means talk this over with your Veterinarian too.
He.she may be able to give you sone tranquilizers that would help calm him.
I had a dog that had to be tranqulized every 4th of july and any time fireworks were used. when she was 11 months old, she was asleep on our front lawn when some cutsie teenagers came by in a car, and threw a cherry bomb into the yard. It went off right behind where she was sleeping, and scared her to death. she was terrified of loud bangs from fireworks, gun shots and anything that sounded like a firecracker, and especially the smell of gunpowder.
When neighborhood children were playing with cap guns, shooting off caps, she had to be tranquilized, and from that time she had to be tranquilized every thunderstorm.
This was back in the 1950s, and i wish I had known about this methid of massage back then. these tools just were not available to us then.
Please let me know how it works out with this poor baby.
