Question
I have a 9 month old peekapoo. Her name is Angel. I am interested in making my own dog food.  Is this okay? Do I need to give her vitamin/mineral supplements and do you know of any books I can read in reference to this?

Answer
Hi Sherrie
Your best bet is to go with the good brnds on the market. Iams, Eucanauba, Science Diet, Walthams, and Nutrp Natural choice.
Thiose companies have spend millions in research to make the best product for your dog's health maintenance, and the quality control is better than in most plants that produce food for humans.
You would need a degree in animal nutrition to formulate a diet to make yourself, and it woulf be so costly.
Those products have all the nutrition in each feeding that your dog needs for optimal growth and health.
Any diet you apttempt on your pwn will fall short in nutrients.
I occasionally make chicken stew for my dogs. They like mom's cooking. LOl
But I don't do this more than once a month.
there are so may things that are not safe to give to dogs, that humans can eat without a problem.
When I make a pot roast I will take out some of the broth I get and strain all the fat off, and let them have it.
They get a plate at thanksgiving and christmas, when all the family is here for dinner. They are family too.
when I bake a chicken or beef roast, I will give them a little of the very lean parts, but i calculate it in with their dog food portion for the day.
It doesn't hurt to do special treats like this from time to time, but you shouldn't let it constitute a major part of their meal.
I feed my dogs, Nutr Natural Choice, the lamb and rice formula.
these food have formulas for the age of the dog. Puppy formula for puppies and young dogs, adult formulas when they reach a certain age and their nutrition needs changes, and senior formulas for the older dogs.
You can't do it better than these companies do it.
