Question
Hi there just a quick one. I have just rescued a dog from a bad home and have found that she is in season. She has been bleeding for about a week. How long will she be bleeding? and how long does this period last for?.
What is the most fertile period?.
Regards
Marc

Answer
Hello Marc. Dogs generally are considered to be 'in heat' beginning on the day that they start bleeding, and for the following 2-3 weeks. Usually, the bleeding lasts about a week, but it can go longer. The female is usually the most fertile between the 11th and 14th day.

I would recommend that you talk to your vet about having her spayed once she is through with this cycle. It will be better for her health in the long run, and will keep you from having to worry about her accidentally getting pregnant.
