Dog depressed after being lost?

Question
We recently lost our 3 year old Shih Tzu, Molly.  She was gone for a month, we were ready to give up the search, when we received a phone call from a lady who had been taking care of her for about 3 weeks.

Since she's been home, she's been VERY depressed.  She used to be a very playful thing, but she won't even go after her toys like she used to.  The lady who had her came to visit tonight, and Molly seemed like she wanted to go home with her.  In fact, while the lady was at our house, Molly perked up and acted like the Molly we remember.

We're really wondering if Molly would be happier with her, or if this is just an adjustment thing?  Is it possible she's upset that she was lost?  We're really not sure what to think.  We are so happy to have her back, but it's upsetting to think she's not happy to be with us!

Answer
Dear Jill,
Thanks for the question. Dogs usually take 7-15 days to adjust to their new environments. I have no idea of how long she has been home, but if she hasn't been home a couple of weeks, she is still adjusting.

Nobody knows, but I don't think dogs dwell on incidents that occurred in the past.

Did the lady have any other dogs? If so, maybe Molly would like to spend some time with some canine companions. Are there any doggie day cares in your area?

Take Molly for walks, teach her new tricks, use your imagination to get her involved in "Find the Treat" games. I imagine that Molly will be "her old self" after she has spent more time back at home.

Happy Training!
