Possible Insect bite

Question
There is a small protruding grayish insect looking lump on the outside of my yorkie's forehead.  It looks as though he might have an insect stuck, maybe sucking blood from his head. There is a dime-size area that appears red and swollen and on top of that is the grayish insect lump.  On the side of it, there is a small red bug with legs.  Could you please advise as to what this might be?

Answer
Elaine,

Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, without seeing your dog it would be very difficult for me to speculate as to what is going on. Do you know how long it's been there, or how long the red swollen area has been there? Is your dog acting any different? I'm not much of an insect expert, and without knowing your location it would be very difficult for me to speculate on this. I do know that the entire things sounds odd - a lot of dogs get insect bites, but it doesn't usually end up like that. What I recommend is calling your local veterinarian today. Tell them what is going on, and they will probably be able to tell you over the phone if your dog needs to  be seen or not.
Also, if your dog isn't already on a prescription grade flea/tick/mosquito repellant like Frontline, you should begin using one - especially with summer approaching. It is definately worth its cost (though its relatively affordable), as the insects it repels carry illness and disease - lymes disease, heartworms, etc.
Good luck with this - let me know what your veterinary clinic says. Sorry I couldn't help more!
