Question
QUESTION: My son and financee have an 8 month old golden retriever/??boxer or maybe pit bull mix who is the best tempermented dog that I have seen in quite some time but is regularly peeing on our rugs in our home.  She has just moved here from PEI (early March)and is currently staying with us.  The other issue is that she will not pee or poo while on a walk only when tied up in our front yard; creating a mess we were not anticipating since our 13 year old mutt does all her peeing, etc. on a walk, not in our yard. She also never had the same peeing issues in the house so we are at a loss as to what we can do.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

ANSWER: Well what you can try is a crate and keep her in there most of the time, except to take her out and to be fed ect and when you take her out, take her for a little walk,so by the time she has to go,she should be able to go on a walk, and praise her every time and she will catch on

Crates work because they usually want to keep there sleeping areas clean and will hold it in for many hours

QUESTION: Thanks for your answer.

One problem is that when we have left the house for a few hours, we have put her in a crate several times and she tended to pee in the crate as well.  Should we just persist and keep crating her when we go out and/or at any time for the next while to see how she reacts ?

Answer
Well what you can try for that is to send her outside before you go,and don't give her any water up to an hour before you go out-and that helps in a lot of cases

Another alternative you might want to try is to gate her in one room, and put down puppy pads, and sometimes that works better for some puppies and when she starts to go on them, slowly move them closer to the door, and that will often move the puppy outside
