which dog is compatible with a Rottweiler?

Question
We have a 5 month old Rotty and we also had a 6 year old poodle, the Rotty is too much for the poodle so we need another compatible dog.  We prefer a short haired dog maybe a Jack Russell? Which would you recommend please?

Answer
Jan,

A Jack Russell is a medium-small dog, and if this is a full-blown, super playful, rough housing Rottweiler, it may be too much for a little terrier too. It might be alright though, just depends on how rough the dog gets. One other short haired breed that may be more compatible (in terms of size at least) is the Labrador. They are almost always super friendly, very playful dogs. One recommendation I would make is to get an opposite sex dog. Dogs tend to have rockier relationships with siblings of the same sex than males and female pairs do. Also, you'll want to get your Rottweiler spayed/neutered by 6 months if you haven't already. This is a general rule of thumb, but is especially significant in your case because it will reduce the risk of any overly aggressive behavior (and also of one dog impregnating the other!).

You can search through hundreds of thousands of great pets who are waiting for homes at www.petfinder.com. You will be able to search for dogs in your area based on size, age, sex, and breed preferences. The site provides pictures of each dog, and often times will tell you how well or if a dog gets along with other dogs.

Below, I provided a link on introducing a new dog to your household. I know you've already done this with the Rottweiler, but things can be a little more complicated in households with over 2 dogs. 3 is the magic number - 3 dogs make a pack (you and your dogs already have your own pack, yes, but this is a different social dynamic.) Don't worry though, you can absolutely do this! I have 3 dogs myself. But I can tell you that it sometimes takes a little extra work. This article is a little long, but don't let it overwhelm you. It's a lot of great information that I really wish I had known before I brought my 3rd dog.
