Dog needs friend?

Question
Hello,
I have a 2 yr. old Boston Terrier that I truly adore. When I am at my sister's house with her pitbull, Beau (my dog's name)doesn't like her (I think it's small dog syndrome). I am a busy nursing student. I take Beau for his daily walks, let him enjoy car rides every now and then. I let him socialize with people when I take him for walks. When I am busy with paperwork for school, I feel sometimes that Beau might like a friend. Although, he is possessive with toys and competes for attention with my sister's dog when at my sister's house. Should I consider another dog now? Beau is already housetrained and I completed a training course with him at Petco.

Answer
Hi,
If you want to get another dog, make sure you get a female.  Terriers are very competitive and two males usually fight.  Sometimes male and female fight, but it is not usually serious.  Introduce a puppy (female), but introduce them outside the home at first.  You can actually see if he likes one pup more than another when you go to pick one out.  You don't have to go for the same breed, but you can if you want to do so.   Teach him the command "Leave it".  Do this with treats by putting a treat on the floor and teaching him to not touch it.  Then pick it up and give him a better treat from your hand.   When he knows that command, and he gets a bit fresh with a new pup, you can say "Leave it"  and he should back off.   After a while, they should become best of friends.  Another Boston will hold her own in play, they are very tough dogs and VERY smart.
