Question
Hello,
My husband and I just rescued an 8 yr old Female Norwegian Elkhound that was a breeder dog at a puppy mill.  The rescue group has been feeding her Natural Balance Duck and Potato.  1 cup with 1/3 can wet food mixed in twice a day.  The group claimed that she doesn't seem very hungry.  Personally, I don't believe that she likes this food since she loves the cat food that is left out.  I would like to feed her something that is good for her, but something that she will also eat!  Please help!  Thank you so much!

Answer
Hi Tasha,

The NB Duck formula is usually  sued for so-called sensitive dogs, who may be intolerant or perhaps even allergic to beef, chicken, lamb and so on.  If there's no reason to believe she has these problems, why not try something more palatable for her? There are SO many really good high quality products available now, you could just switch to the NB Ultra Premium, or check out (google) Wellness, Innova, Fromm, Merricks, Acana or Origen - a plethora of choices. My hunch is try Acana, the Grasslands in particular is excellent - and keep a babygate between her and the cat's eating area. My two Ridgebacks are home fed and they still try to scarf catfood any chance they get.
Good on you for rescuing, too. Let me know what you decide to do and how she does on it. Especially if you go higher protein, transitions slowly. If she IS sensitive, check out Fromm Four Star line - I like the Duck formula best, but there's several others that could work too.

All the best, Catherine
