Question
QUESTION: I've only had my puppy for a couple of weeks. When we brought him home, he had small hard poops. I've already taken him to the vet, and he has had deworming. His poop for the last week or so has been runny and dark, and he has had some really bad gas. My husband thinks it's the puppy food, because once he eats, he seems to get kind of lethargic and he'll sleep. But as soon as he poops, he's running all over the place and wants to play. I'm taking him to the vet in a few days, since he already has an appointment, but what can I do in the meantime?

ANSWER: Stress, change of food, and change of environment all can cause your puppy to have the loose bowel movements.  The puppy could also still have some parasites or other disease such as coccidia or giardia.  In any case it is important that until you get him to the vet that you keep him hydrated and his sugar level good.  Shih Tzu and Hypoglycemia are common.  So, start by giving your puppy 1/2 tsp of kaopectate (childrens) to clear up the diarrhea, then purchase Pedialyte and replace your puppies water with this until the diarreah clears up.  Also, be sure you feed only dry food (a good puppy small bite) for sensitive stomach and feed him a small amount, see how he does and do this every few hours rather than letting him just eat all day or big meals.  Also, if you can find it Hill's prescription diet i/d (canned food) probably only from your vet and you can feed him about a tablespoon or two.  If he is vomiting or passing blood in his stool then take him to an emergency vet ASAP.
Signs of hypoglycemia are: Staggering, vacant stare, sleeping , lethargy, shaking head in an unnatural way (actually kinda rolling the neck)  Also the gums will be very pale white or blue.  Should this occur, quick and calm action is required IMMEDIATELY!  If you have Nutri-Cal give it to puppy, if not ,use  honey, clear karo syrup, rubbing on the tougue and gums.  If neither is available, use plain white sugar.    Continue with small amounts until puppy returns to normal.  If there is no improvement, contact your veterinarian.  I hope this helps.  Let me know how he does.

QUESTION: No, he is not exhibiting any signs of hypoglycemia. I adjusted the amount of food that he is eating, and he doesn't seem tired after he eats anymore, so I think I was feeding him too much. He is very happy and healthy. And there really doesn't seem to be anything wrong with him, except his poop is still wet. it's not runny like before, but it's not small and hard like it was. What kind of puppy food do you recommend?

Answer
I feed Purina Pro Plan Select Puppy until they are 1 and then I switch to Purina Pro Plan Select Turkey or Salmon.  They also have a sensitive stomach formula that I've used for those that I have who have a more delicate system.  I've tried other brands like Science Diet, etc., in the past and this one has been the best for me and it was not ever on the food recall list.  Hope this helps and thank you for letting me know how he is doing.
