Question
My son is fixing to turn one an i was wanting to get him a poodle. People keep saying that he is to young for a dog. Which kind is the best for a child this young. I read that the Standard and Miniature are the best because the toy breed was snappy. Thanks so much!!

Answer
Hello Nikki,
I think getting a dog for a young child is a great idea as long as the child and the puppy are properly supervised and that the child is taught how to handle a puppy the right way.  You need to be sure that your child realizes that this puppy is alive and not just a toy.  Some children see small dogs/puppies as a doll or plaything, and if the child is harsh with the puppy, the puppy can become snappy or bitey.
In my personal opinion, a Miniature Poodle will be a better match for your young son than a Standard for now.  Most Std Poodle puppies are high energy and could hurt a child with their size and exuberent play.   A Miniature Poodle will still be high energy as a puppy, but his/her size won't intimidate a child as much as a large puppy would.
When you go to see the puppies, take your child with you and look at all the puppies.  See which puppies aren't afraid of your child and will come up to you both.  Next, look at the puppies individually to see which one best matches for you and your child.  You will want one that is laid back, but seems eagar to play and interact with you.

When looking for a breeder, look for a professional breeder rather than someone who just happened to have a litter.  Some breeders are hesitant to sell a puppy to someone with a child so young, but your chances will be better if you insure the breeder that you will be responsible with the supervision between child and puppy.  It may cost a bit more, but a professional breeder will know the background of their dogs and you will be able to know that your dogs genetic makeup and health is insured.  You will also want a Health Guarntee for your dog just in case something were to go wrong.  This insures that you can get another puppy back or at least a partial refund if the puppy is sick or has a genetic fault.  You can check with the American Kennel Club for Reputable Breeders in your area by going to http://www.akc.org/breeds/poodle/puppy.cfm or by going here: http://www.poodlesonline.com/

You might think about getting the puppy into some Obedience or at least puppy classes.  This will help socialize your puppy and will also teach it some manners.  It is never to early to start teaching your puppy how to listen.  Your local Vet or Pet Stores can direct you to trainers in your area.  If you have a PetSmart or PetCo in your area, some of those stores offer training classes.  You will want a group class so that your puppy can be socalized with both people and other dogs.  Even if your son can't participate with the puppy right now, he can start learning the commands and with your help can even tell the puppy "Sit" or "Down" and give a treat.

Good Luck with your search and if you would like help with other suggestions or have other questions for me, please feel free to ask.
