Question
QUESTION: I have a full breed husky, who is one year in may. he is shedding really bad, in big clumps and i cant get him to eat very good. and he looks underweight. i don't know what i should do, what type of food should i buy him> Is his shedding normal?

ANSWER: Chances are the shedding is COMPLETELY normal at this age.  Twice a year, every bit of the undercoat should come out in a process called "blowing coat."  It happens usually at spring and fall, and usually begins in dogs the first spring/fall after about the age of 9 months.  As for underweight issue, can you answer this:

1) Height of the husky (measured to the shoulder)
2) Type of food being fed
3) Amount of food per feeding
4) Number of times fed per day
5) Activity level (how much exercise)

---------- FOLLOW-UP ----------

QUESTION: 1) he is about 22-23 inches
2) 1 can of purina chop house or other types of purina canned food, and 2 1/1 cups of purina dog chow
3) he eats all day long, i feed him his dog food mixed with can and he leaves some left and munches the rest of the day, occasoinally he will eat it all and i will give him a cup and a half in the morning.
2 a week i mix an egg with his food, and 3 pieces of bread.
he is kenneled during the day, in the house i let him out in the morning for 45 minutes before work, and i let him out from between 4pm and 5 pm till about 9:30-10 to play. he comes in and sleeps for the rest of the day.

Answer
One thing I forgot to ask was what is his weight right now?

Keep in mind that a Sibe at this age has pretty much reached his full height, but generally will be filling out his frame and gaining muscle.  Also, when the Sibe blows coat - they look really thin!  A lot of what you are used to seeing on them is just their fluffy coats, so that might be part of it.

What I would do is keep an eye on his weight and make sure he's not loosing any.  My guess is the dog should be around 45-60 lbs. right now, but a lot of that depends on his frame.  If you'd like to send me a picture, ask a "private" question and I'll reply with my email.
