2 year old female husky

Question
My 2 year old husky, who has never barked, growled or snapped at anyone, and has always been very patient and sweet to my 7 year old son, has decided that her toy is her "baby".  In the last few days she has gotten her toy and curled up on the couch protecting it and when any other animals, or my 7 year old son, walk by she jumps and growls and then cuddles back up with her "baby".  She has never done this before.  She has not exhibited this behavior with my husband, my adult son, or myself, but when we approach her we are slow and calm about it.  Last night she nicked my 7 year old with her tooth.  What can I do to help her?  My 7 year old is terrified of her now.

I appreciate any advice you may have.

Answer
Fist off, take the toy away! If she cannot handle the responsibility of having a toy, just like a child, she loses the privileges. She also might (if not spayed) be going through a false pregnancy or about to go into heat. This makes them more emotional and snippy, if you are not planning on breeding her I suggest you get her spayed to ease this problem.

Second you need to take her to obedience class, bring your 7 year old child and make it a family outing. She is now a teenager in dog years and could also probably be rebelling and trying to take over the house. I would also remove the privilege of sitting on the couch (her throne of authority her high ground, in a wolf pack the alpha sits on the high ground). But obedience class is the most important thing because it puts you in contact with a trainer who can SHOW you what to do and how to handle the dog and what body language to look for.

Just allowing this to happen in your home is you allowing this to happen to you child. The moment she did this I would of snatched the toy and kenneled the dog for 10 mins like grounding her. I am sure if your child would of bit someone in the house they would of lost privileges and went on time out, why is the dog exempt? They can understand bad behavior = loss of items. They aren't dumb in the slightest. Since she has been good for up to this point it shouldn't take long to get your dog back.
