Mass under Jaw/ear area

Question
My 1 yr old male Dachshund had a mass under his ear on his cheek/jaw area about the size of a plum.  Would a Doxie this young get cancer? This is my first hound so I am not sure of their health issues.  I have on order, the book, "Dachshunds For Dummies", in hopes of getting answers.  I have an appointment for him to have it removed next Monday morning 6/20/11.  The location of this mass/lump worries me.  It is also a bit firm, but it does not seem to bother him.  He still eats well and plays with the other dogs. I am just worried, but can not get him to the Vet until Monday.  I am just hoping for some good news!

Answer
It can be a lot of things so I would not worry now - save the worries for later.  It could be an infection, a bee sting/insect bite, a fluid buildup, etc.  Wait to see what the vet says - Monday is not that far off and since he is eating and doing fine, it should be okay.  Keep an eye on it and check for any oozing, open spots, etc, until you get him there.  Also note any changes in size for your vet.  I wish you the best!  Let me know what happens.
