Bringing new puppy home

Question
Hi, I will be getting my new puppy next week, mini male shorthaire daxie.  Would it be better to pick him up in the morning, to give him time to adjust to his new surroundings before crating for bedtime, or would it be better to pick him up in the evening and suffering the first night of separation anxiety, starting with a fresh day in his new home in the morning?  Also, for the ride home, would it be better to have him in a blanket in someone's arms, providing attention or having him safely crated?  I have been reading a lot on the daxie breed, training techniques, and hopefully will have a good foundation to start my puppies life at home.
Thanks

Answer
I would do morning but it is a matter of preference.  You will have more than one day and night of puppy heartache for awhile.  Bringing him home - let  the person he needs to bond to hold him unless it is a long ride.  Crating him is safer if you plan to make stops, etc. but he will be happier being held.  So it is preference again.  I got a blind dachshund recently and he was held all the way home.  I am not a big crating fan so I do not use them unless traveling on vacation, etc.  Remember holding him a lot the first few days will cause problems with separation anxiety but he does need to be held and given lots of love!  Good luck!
