Toy dachsund with skin sores

Question
Hi, I am really hoping someone can help me. I have a 3 year old toy dachshund. She seems to have skin allergies, or this is what the vet has advised. She has been to the vet numerous times about this, but none of the meds seem to be helping. She is getting worse, and I fear she may not make it, or will have to be put to sleep. She has terrible sores all over her body. They are oozing, and scabby. They are on the tips of her ears, around her mouth, on the pads of her feet. Her most recent one is on the inside of her mouth, and is so swollen she cannot close her mouth. She cannot eat. I have been having to feed her pureed foods. The vet has her on prednisone, and another antibiotic. Nothing is helping. She is loosing her fur as well. We moved from TX to OK last October, and these sores appeared about 4 months ago. The vet blames allergies, but I have changed nothing in her daily life, and she went w/out sores for months. I am desperate. The vet bills are getting too high, and I am at a loss. Please help!

Answer
My first thought would be allergies too.  She can develop allergies to food, something in her environment, etc.  She sounds miserable and I wish I had an answer.  I am not sure of her size, background, and how long she has been on the meds.  If I were her vet, I would be very concerned.  How big is she?  There is no such thing as a toy dachshund so I assume she is a mini? Has she been on the meds for several days?  You should see some improvement.  Have you tried a different vet?  Maybe this one does not deal with dachshunds much or is uncertain what to do?  Have you tried to change her diet?  Some dogs develop allergies to beef.  We have a dachshund who has to be on lamb and rice only or he gets very ill.   It sounds like a very serious situation.  I understand about vet bills - it is so expensive.  Have you tried calling your vet and telling him or her that she is getting worse?  I have an excellent vet who is renowned on the East Coast.  If it becomes a situation where you cannot keep her, let me know.  I will see if I can take her and get her to a really good vet before she gets beyond help.  I do so wish I could help more.  I would press the panic button with your vet and see what they say.  If they are not concerned, get a new one - fast!
