2 male dogs

Question
We have had dog 1 for 9 years (since he was a puppy).
We have introduced dog 2 (about 3 years old) to the household 3 days ago.
Both dogs are male. Neither has been neutered
They seem to generally get along, except that they are constantly mounting each other.
They are both miniature dachshunds. D1 weighs 14 lbs,D2 8 lbs .
We are concerned that D1 will hurt D2's back and want to modify their extra curricular behavior.

We just started spraying D1 with a water each time he goes to mount D2. This seems to have cooled him off (he doesn't like water). D1 seems to be fixated with D2. D1 has not had a consistent playmate. They share food and toys well.  They enjoy going for walks together, they do seem to be competitive with each other during their walks. D2 was abandoned and then foster cared for about 6 weeks before he came to us. D2 does seem to dominate the food dish.

We are wanting to modify their behavior and continue to have them get along. Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Answer
Yes, get them neutered.  It will take about 30 days to get the hormones to die down, but it will be well worth it.  Neutering is also healthier for them and they will be able to get along better without worrying over the sex drive.  I have 6 males dachshunds and they still will try to mount but very very infrequently.  They all get along really well but not when an unaltered male came into the group.  I got them all at different times and they are quite the little pack now.  I had a more dominant male that I got neutered and he settled right down and fits in really well now.  You will always have problems with these guys since they are already doing this until you get them altered and they settle, although they may settle a bit - 3 days is not a long time.  Enjoy your dog and their personalities without having to fight the male hormones - I did and my boys are wonderful pets.  It will also make life easier!  And just an FYI although it is not at all important, a 14 lb dachshund is not a miniature dachshund.  I just like to educate everyone who is interested in the breed as much as possible!  And thanks for taking in D2 who needed a home and deserved a better life!  Good luck, enjoy your babies, and get them altered!
