breeding limits??

Question
I am wondering how many times one can breed a female miniature dachshund. We have a male and female with respectable blood lines. They've mated twice, once having three pups and the other having only one. Someone said they can only mate twice, per AKC regs. Someone else said that they can breed up to 5 times, once per year. Is any of that true? I've found no definitive answer anywhere.

Answer
If you must breed, it would be better to not do it more than once a year.  It brings the female down too fast.  Usually they are bred until age 5 or 6.  If you have AKC registered show dogs and are going to register the pups, then you might be concerned about regs, but otherwise it is not an issue.  Usually AKC breeders do DNA testing on their dogs before breeding.  If you find that you do breed again and only have one, there may be an issue and I would not breed them again.  Also, please remember that altering both dogs will be better for their health - it is a proven fact that altering helps prevent illness and other health problems.  As far as I know, there are no hard and fast rules, but reputable breeders are very careful about breeding and how often - which of course is totally opposite of what puppy millers do, as I am sure you are aware.  Hope that helps.
