doxy in heat

Question
Our Dachshund is 9 months and just had her first heat. We intended to get her fixed but were suprised at how young she went into heat. During the course of her heat we kept a good eye on her and were pretty certain that she did not come in contact with any male dogs. She seems to be comming out of heat but now her teets are growing. Is this part of her cycle? Possibly a false pregnancy? Or is this a sign that our perfect little pure breed dox, with her impressive pedigree, is pregnant by some unknown mutt? I read that false pregnancy can occur during the last two stages of heat. Another article said that growing teets is a sign of pregnancy. In your experience do dachshunds teets usually swell after heat or does it more often mean a pregnancy?

Answer
I have seen a couple of false pregnancies after or during heat but it is hard to know.  At 9 months she is ready for heat cycles - most dogs are spayed by the time they are around 6 months old to prevent problems.  Your best bet is to have her checked so you will knot for sure at your vet.  If it is a false pregnancy, she can even have milk ooze out but typically teets do not grow until much later in pregnancy - closer to delivery time.  At least that is the experiences we have had with pregnant females.  I have had a couple of them have some hard false pregnancies.  So without knowing how long she has been in heat, what she is acting like, etc. it is hard to tell but I would lean towards false alarm since it is not typical to get large teets until later in pregnancy.  I have seen some not get swelled teets until the pups are born. Again, have her checked out to be sure - your vet will be able to tell.
