Ear Problem

Question
I have a 3 1/2 old english bulldogge. He was recently diagnosed with flank alopecia. I noticed his left ear is red inside. Could this be an ear infection in the bulldogge breed?

Answer
If the vet didn't do a thyroid test on your dog, ask for one, it's a T3/T4 test, inexpensive, and may be the cause of your "flank alopecia".

The ear is probably infected and needs treatment. This is a common Bulldog thing and you'll have to be very vigilant in keeping the ears clean and dry. Use a medication called Otomax which you can get from your vet. A drop in the ear 2-3 times a week and then clean them out should take care of the problem as long as there isn't any secondary infection going on.
