Question
Hi, I hope you can help me. My cat "Chi" is a Tonkinese. She is 3 yrs old. Two weeks ago she has surgery and had all her teeth out, except for her front fangs, due to being allergic to her own tartar. She was dehydrated as she hadn't been eating  and drinking much) and had a kidney infection. When she came home she had a course of antibiotics and she has recovered very well and is eating fine. Two nights ago she slept on my bed, and whilst asleep she weed and didn't even notice, then last night she slept on my daughters bed and did the same thing. She is using her cat litter box during the day or going outside. My daughter loves taking her to bed but she leaves the door open so she can go to the laundry to her cat litter box if she wants. Since she has been back from the vets ( being in there for a week) she is extremely affectionate with the whole family and is constantly purring and wanting to sit on our knees ( which is lovely). Do you have any idea why she has done this.
Thankyou for your time
Debi

Answer
Debi,

I would highly suggest that you start off by taking Chi to the vet to have follow up testing as her infection may not be totally cleared up. I would also suggest follow up blood work so that your vet can check on the function of Chi's internal organs. I would suggest that you use an enzymatic cleaner to clean anywhere other than the litter pain that Chi has peed so that she doesn't make the same mistake based solely on scent. It is possible that Chi is having some issues with urinating due to some lingering infection or possibly a new infection in her bladder. If the vet can't find any evidence of a current issue that would make Chi uncomfortable enough to be urinating outside of the litter box then I would recommend that you clean out all of the litter pans well. I would suggest that you try an unscented clumping kitty litter in her box and that you place 2 boxes per floor of your home for the time being. If the peeing outside the box is due to an issue of control then this should help and you can gradually wean down the number of boxes, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have one of the litter pans end up in your daughter's room. If Chi has been acting out of character there may be another issue that is yet undiagnosed so your options are really going to be dictated by Chi's blood and urine test results. If Chi has lost control of her bladder which does sound possible from what you are describing you may have to consider options such as diapers, a protective mattress pad for Chi on each bed, or in some cases there may not be any cure or treatment for this issue. You and your vet will have to try and figure out what is best, because based on your description I don't think that this is a deliberate action and there seems to be a good possibility that Chi has lost control of her bladder. I wish that I had more suggestions or options, but ultimately if Chi has lost control of her bladder there may not be too many options that I can give as that would signify a medical issue. I am sorry that I haven't been able to help as much as I would have liked to. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me again.
