Question
When a cat is in the process of having kittens, how much time apart is it between kittens?

Answer
Vanessa,

It varies between cats, but I would say that if you haven't seen another kitten in 2 hours at the most I am guessing that she has had all of her babies. A concern that I think you should be aware of is that if you notice that mom is just not acting like herself and the babies seem squirmy and noisy it might be a good idea to have mom to the vet within the next 24 hours to make sure that all of the kittens have been born and that none are stuck in the uterine horns or the birth canal. I would suggest that you see a vet within the next 24 hours in any case just to make sure that everybody is doing well and to make sure that mom is recovering as she should. Remember to keep the kittens in a quiet, dim location. You can handle them, but keep it to about once a day until they are at least a week old. After their eyes are open socialisation becomes your job with the babies, you are going to have to get them used to being handled from routine handling such as an exam at the vet's to gently childproofing them if you have children. I really recommend that you keep mom inside and have her spayed 2 weeks after she weans her kittens. There are many kittens euthanised each year in animal shelters simply because there aren't enough homes to go around. I hope that this answers your question and offers a few helpful tips.
