Question
bald spot
bald spot
Hello Jessica,

Today I noticed that there is a bald spot on my cat's nose. I don't know how long it has been like that, possibly not long otherwise I will notice sooner. I just wonder if it's something I should worry? Will it get any larger? Will the hair grow back?

A little background about her: She is one year old, strictly indoor. She got her dewormer 2 month ago while getting the booster vaccine shot. (I don't think she had worm but my vet said we can still deworm her just in case.) She doesn't seems to be uncomfortable about her nose. And she is otherwise healthy. I also have another cat, but the two girls are both very gentle and get along really well, so I don't think they were fighting and my other girl scratched her. Besides, both of them got their nails trimmed periodically.

I attached a photo. Hope it helps. Thanks for your help!

Answer
Hi Yingying,

What a pretty cat! To me, it just looks like a little dermatitis, probably caused by an allergy, or perhaps like she scraped her nose on something. There doesn't seem to be the crusting present that typically comes along with infections, mites or major auto-immune inflammation. I think you're okay to watch this little patch and just make sure it doesn't spread and that the skin doesn't break or become crusty. If the bald patch does look worse, or more develop, she should see a vet. If it's as I suspect and was only the result of a scrap or minor allergic reaction, it should resolve shortly, and the fur will grow back.

Best wishes!
Jessica
