Question
hello,
i've read the article about giving prozac to cats, but here in Belgium this is not yet in use by the veterinarians. My cat Indra is one of the 6 cats that i have+ i got 2 dachshunds too. those 8 animals are very important to me, because they are my children (i have no human children because of my illness (i have OCD).Indra came to live with us when he was 2 years old, we took him in from an animal shelter(in the shelter he was paniced a lot: he was growling, blowing and looking very afraid. he even wouldn't let me touch him, but i fell in love with his appearance: he had blue eyes and was a crossing siamese (and i just had lost a crossing siamese...), so the lady of the animal shelter put him in a box and he went home with us. at first Indra was very afraid of us, but bit by bit i earned his trust: he often makes that noise that cats usually do when they are happy (he spins), he comes when he's happy to ask attention, but he doesn't likes to be picked up (then he panics).approximately one year after that indra lived here the the other to male cats began to 'tease'(bullying) him and indra ran afraid away, leaving a bit of hair on the ground.
not very long after the teasing started indra starts to pee, i think out of stress , because he's afraid of the other cats...
the peeing held on for a while, and then stopped, again after a while the peeing started again for a longer while, again stopped, again peeing started....every time the peeing restarts, it became worse:he pees always more and more. the veterinarian recommended feliway ,he also gave indra shots against peeing, nothing seemed to help and the peeing time always became longer and longer and the time between the peeing always became shorter and shorter. in the meanwhile we are desperate: indra pees everywhere and also o lot on the sofas, we clean as much as we can, but now the sofas smell terrible and we have to buy new ones...in the meantime , my boyfriend hates indra for the peeing, one he wants to put him down.... : idead indra is giving us a lot of work , and i can't handle all the work anymore with my OCD, there has to come a solution, but to put him down...I love him so much, i'm sick of sadness, because there is no solution... Maybe you could tell me about the dose of prozac i have to give to indra, i read about the peeing that stoppes when giving prozac  a cat that is stressed, IT'S MY LAST HOPE FOR MY BABY INDRA , PLEASE HELP ME IF YOU CAN

Answer
Hi Vanessa,

When my cat was on Prozac, he took 10mg a day. That's the best advice I can give you regarding the Prozac. I don't know if they have tried any other antidepressants for cats in Belgium. Some cats respond to amitriptyline, buspirone or clomipramine. If your vet prescribes these then maybe you could try one of them for Indra.

I'm sorry the Feliway didn't work. That's a product I like, and I always recommend it before antidepressants.

Best of luck.
