cats and deep sleep

Question
Tonight my cat was sleeping when he started to freak out due to a dream.  We tried to wake him up but he didn't respond.  He had his eyes open at one point but all his eyes were was very tiny slits.  The smallest they have ever been.  Is this really a deep sleep or is there something wrong?

It's hard for me to tell you without more information.

How old is your cat? what exactly was his behaviour, as freaking out can mean many different things to people? Does he have any existing nedical problems? And what was happening in the house (any noises etc) at the time? And more importantly, when he recovered what did he do and how is he now?
