Question
My cat is 8 months old and an indoor cat. She got out and bit a lady. The lady is worried about rabees and I wanted to know what I could do. My cat got her mandatory shots in January. I have been bitten while playing with her and nothing has ever happened to me. The lady needs the shot records but the place that we got them done at closed down 3 months ago. Can you tell me any advise about cats and rabees that would help?

Answer
Well as long as the cat has had her shots the lady will be fine. The shot really is to prevent rabies from advancing in the cat very quickly. If your cat is bitten by a wild animal, you still have to take it to the vet for more advanced rabies care. The manditory shot is just enough medicine for you to get your pet to the vet before the rabies has a chance to kill them. If your cat had rabies you would definatly know it. Your vet should have given you a rabies tag. That tag is supposed to have a serial number on it. Give that woman the serial number and she can call whoever it is that handles that stuff and they can tell her if that is an up to date tag, which in turn means the cat's shot is up to date. I think that the lady is just trying to make a bigger deal of it then there is. She needs to clean the wound well and see a doctor, and of course she will want you to pay for that. Good luck!
