Question
QUESTION:  i have 2 cats, little george and roofer, and 1 dog, hoggie. my question is about little george...he will not come to anyone. he runs away from everyone. hes not mean, we just cant get near him without him running away. hes 5 years old. he loves hoggie and follows her around and rubs against her. roofer, our other cat, is little georges mother. do you know what we can do to bring about more friendliness

ANSWER: Hi George,

Have you had George his whole life is he relatively new to you?  It never ceases to amaze me that I can have a litter of kittens who are raised in the same atmosphere and by the same mother and yet one will be very shy, like you describe.  George may have had a bad experience with a human once or he may just be a shy little guy who prefers the company of other animals over humans.  You can try playing with him with toys that don't require you to be too close to him, like throwing a ball with a bell in it or using a feather teaser.  You could also try putting something in their water like "Rescue Remedy" (you can get it or something similar at the pet store) that will help calm him and also use plug-in pheromone emitters like "Comfort Zone."  These might help but you may have to resign yourself to the fact that he's a shy kitty and may never be anything else.  Some of these cats are giving you everything they can and you have to accept them as they are; after all don't they accept us unconditionally?

QUESTION: i have had little george his who;e life . his mother, roofer, only had 1 (one) kitten in her litter...him.

Answer
Hi George,

It could be that little George is shy because he was an only child and he naturally feels safe and secure with Roofer or  you may just have a naturally shy kitten on your hands.  Be patient, don't make him do anything he doesn't want to do (like picking him up and holding him), just let him come to you.  Try the "Rescue Remedy" and "Comfort Zone" though and see if that doesn't help some.
