Bad Smelling Cat Urine

Question
We got Tom (My cat) in May 2005 when he was about 6 weeks old he was fine until January 2006. All he ate was Purina Dry food and about a Tablespoon or 2 of wet food a day. It began about 2 weeks after I brought a 6 month old puppy home (late January), Tom was about 9 months old when his pee started to smell very bad. Tom was neutered when he was 6 months old (one of his testicles were not descended and the vet went ahead and descended it manually and finished the surgery) When the pee started to smell i thought it was a urine ifection and sent him to the cetthe vet actually thought it was stress due to the puppy) but that was not the case.  After having urine samples tested, being on 3-4 different medications including a relaxant that went in his ears, nothing was helping him. The vet then believed maybe there had been some tissue missed after he was neutered so we had 2 other tests done (one to check his major organs the other for his levels of testosterone which would show if anything was left in him) both were fine.  He seemed fine besides the pee, he was still very playful and lovable, never seemed to be in discomfort until the beginning of May.  Not noticing at the time but knowing now, Tom began to start meowing very loudly and quite often and  his pee still smelled very fowl almost like some  strong poison.  On May 17, It was 6 a.m. Tom had thrown up on the floor - it looked like cat food and I just cleaned it up.  Around 9:30 a.m. he had thrown up again but this time it was a yellow-white color.  I never thought it had anything to do with th pee. In the end, My beuatiful Tom was found by my boyfriend at 11:00 a.m. curled up in a ball like always, but this time he didn t wake up anymore.  I was so mad i went to the vet and picked up a copy of all the tests but I can t understand them. Tom was the best thing that happened to me.  Thank you so much for your help and I would appreciate any comments.  I just need to ease my mind.

Answer
Hi Cindy!

This is just the saddest story. I am so sorry that you lost Tom.  I wish I could help you know what was wrong, but I honestly do not have a clue.  I have never heard of urine being that strong that it smelled like poison. I would think that it was some type of infection, but surely that would have shown up when the vet did the urine tests. I think you did everything you could possibly do.  You had no way of knowing how serious this was for Tom , especially since you took him to a vet and tests were run which were negative.  Please do not beat yourself up over this. You are not at fault here. Sometimes things like this happen and we don't know why.  I can understand why you were mad and of course, very sad too.  I wish I was more helpful.  My heart goes out to you.

God Bless,
Becky
