ANSWER: Charlotte,

I am so glad to hear that you took an interest in this kitty. It sounds as though she finally has a good home where she will be well cared for. The best nutritional advice that I can offer is to feed a good quality kitten food and make sure that there is a bowl of kitten kibble available at all times so that your kitty can eat whenever she is hungry. You could certainly ask your vet about feeding a high calorie diet to supplement the regular and if the vet feels that it is warranted then he/she will discuss quantities with you. There is also the option of asking your vet about offering this kitty weaning formula which is commercially available, but again this is something that your vet will have details about. The other thing that you can do is to offer special treats of minced meat like chicken, turkey and the odd bit of lamb, it will encourage her to eat a bit more and hopefully it will help her growth. As for this kitty being described as 5 months old by your vet this decision is based on how her teeth have progressed. My oldest cat actually went into heat for the first time at 3 months, so I should warn you that a kitty going into heat is not a reliable indicator of age. You may find that if you were to see this kitty's brothers and sisters that they are all small, sometimes it is a family trait, so unless you can see this kitty's ribs, or feel her hip bones or ribs clearly I wouldn't worry too much about her growth. I am sure that she is being really well fed now, and if she needs to catch up with any growth she will try eating you out of house and home! Enjoy your new little friend, and please feel free to send photos and keep in touch, it is always nice to hear how the kitties I try to help are doing.
