one cat or two?

Question
I have a 4yr old male Russian Blue Cat that I got from the shelter when he was 9mos old. How do I know if he would like a female companion? He is inside only and VERY attached to me. He waits by the door till I come home, sleeps right next to me, and follows me everywhere I go around the house. He gets very jealous when my husband even touchs me, and starts biting to get my entire attention. My husband and I play with him alot, and treat him like he is our child. He always looks outside at other animals and gets excited when he sees another cat outside. He seems like he would like a friend, but I don't know for sure. I wish I could test a female cat out tempoarily, but how do you do know they will like each other? When we travel, we have to leave him in the house by himself. How do I tell if I should get him a girl friend? On one hand, I don't want him to be lonely, but on the other I don't want to ruin the bond I have with him. What should I do?

Answer
Hi Kari,

Cats seem to do better when there are two of them. Getting another cat won't break that bond you have with him. He will just extend his "pride" to include the new one. The biggest advice I can give you though is to get a kitten. Your older guy will accept a younger cat alot easier than getting an older cat. Personally, I have the best luck assimilating cats into the household when I get a kitten about 8-10 weeks old. Just make sure whether you get a male or female to get them neutered as soon as you can. Otherwise you will have periods of fur flying. Good luck.
