Question
I found a stray mother cat and her 4 newborn kittens about 7 weeks ago, I think the kittens were about a day old, but I could be wrong. I brought them all into the house where they've been since but now the mother looks like she is going to have more kittens, her stomach is larger and she is eating and drinking A LOT, she also seems restless and wants more attention, but she bites me when I put my hand on her stomach unless I'm extra gentle and sometimes she feels "lumpy" is it even possible for a cat to have kittens 7 to 9 weeks apart?

Answer
Hi Mary,

First of all, well done on giving a home to this little family - I hope the kittens are doing well.  I'm afraid that it is possible for a female cat to become pregnant again within a few days of giving birth, and many of the signs that you describe suggest that she could be pregnant again.  However, there may be a number of other reasons for her appearance and behaviour, including a possible complication resulting from the previous birth.  I would suggest that you take her to be examined by a vet, to be on the safe side.  If you are planning to keep her as a pet, please consider having her spayed as soon as possible, as cats do become pregnant easily and you could face a number of unwanted kittens.

Hope this is helpful, and best of luck.

Take care
