Two male cats fighting

Question
Recently my two male cats, one 4 yrs old and the other 1yr. They both still have claws and are not neutered. About a month ago they started fighting at night, so i got two litterboxes, thinking that would solve it and it did for a day. Now i have to keep them in seperate room constantly. What can i do to keep them from fighting and hurting each other.

Answer
Sarah,

Keeping whole males together is tricky business at best.  Do they draw blood when they fight?  Do they fight all the time, or is it sporadic with lots of noise and, maybe, some loose fur.  If they are not hurting each other, you could just leave the status quo, grit your teeth and ignore the chaos.

Is there a reason they are not neutered?

The problem is that the testosterone really gets flowing in whole males if there are females in season near by or if another male cat, they do not know, comes into their territory.  At best you have an uneasy peace, and at worst you have mayhem.

Often, once two whole males decide to no longer get along, it seems to be almost impossible to get them to get along again.

So, if you think they will harm each other, you can try a Feliway diffuser to see if that takes the edge off.  You can also consider getting one or both neutered.  You can try an Alpha spayed female to put them both in their places (not always easy to find and integrate into the community). Or, you can just keep them separated.

I am sorry there is no easy way out of this.

Please let me know what you decide to do.

Best regards... Norm.
