Cats broken leg and aggression

Question

Little Scout
Hello, I wanted to pose a query to you about my cat's recent behavior. I have a 8 month old male (neutered) Russian Blue, named Scout, who recently took a little leap of faith and didn't fare to well. He attempted to jump from a chair onto our exercise bike, only to fall incorrectly and break his tibia. I immediately took him to the vet who took some x-rays of his leg and confirmed the break. He now has a splint, and has been eating fine, using the litter box and generally has been back to his little Scout self, albeit with a large splinted leg.

There is one problem however that I am facing. Scout seems to bite a lot more now. He never was "bitey" but since the accident he has begun to bite and claw with his back paws (he has all of his claws). He purrs like a jackhammer, but then all of a sudden, with no warning he turns and bites your hand, even if you are not touching him. In addition, some times he bites my hands when I pet him while he rubs on me. I am very careful not to touch or put pressure anywhere near his leg. What could possibly be causing such odd behavior? My only opinion about it is that the vet advised us to keep him separated from my older female cat (spayed) and to keep him in a small room with his litter box, bed and water/food. I have done so, but I think he might be acting out perhaps? If I place him in there before I go to work, he meows loudly forever. In the evening when I return from work I will hold him and give him attention and let him walk around my spare bedroom alone supervised. I was told by the vet to minimize all walking as it may injure the leg that is to be in the cast for 8 weeks, then I place him back into the room, only for him to resume the howling. Why is my little one biting me all of a sudden? What is making him meow so much and so loudly? He also bites my fiance, who will hold him and give him attention just as she normally would until he sinks his little teeth into her. How can we discipline this or correct this? Are we doing something wrong? Please help!!! Thank you

Answer
I'm so sorry to hear about that..

Your kitty is probably in a good deal of pain from his injury..and unfortunately that pain doesn't have to be limited to his leg! He could be having headaches, nausea, muscle cramps from not being able to exercise normally--and just general stress! Any abnormal feelings will set him on edge.. and that probably means he won't be himself for awhile.
Also keep in mind that he's probably very irritated by that splint, which is no doubt hindering his movement. He probably isn't able to groom himself properly, and it may be painful to do simple things like lying down, walking around, and defecating..so no doubt he's very agitated.
It might feel good to get a scratch at first..but as you continue, he starts to get annoyed. Biting is his natural reaction to say "stop that now!"
I would give him attention, care, supervision, but namely time. He just needs some space, and when he gets that splint off, he'll practically be good as new :)
As for the meowing...unfortunately you don't have a lot of options. Other than putting him in a room out of hearing distance, you probably just have to deal with it :(

You're not doing anything wrong. You sound like you really care about your pet! But giving him some time in his own space will help you both. Just see if things aren't resolved. After he gets his splint off, make sure you let him have a couple days to adjust to being in the swing of things again.

Hope all goes well.. :)
