OUTSIDE OR INSIDE

Question
Hello Norman,
I currently have 2 indoor cats, and a friend of mine pretty much gave me another one, which i really can't handle right now..i also have 4 dogs.
anyway, she found it outside about a month ago, and i have been trying to find it a home ever since...with no luck.
i'd say the kitten is about 7 weeks old now.
i have found it a home recently, however the new family would like it to be an outside cat with it's other cat.  both cats will have a shed to get into during inclimate weather..it snows here in kentucky.
my concern:  is this going to be a decent life?  i know it's crazy, but i've always had indoor cats, and i was afraid i would be cruel to put a cat out, once it's been indoors for a month.  obviously, i'm not an expert on cat behavior as yourself, and was wondering if this would have a negative impact on this kitten?
i am very torn. i know these folks will take good care of the kitten, but i don't want him to be unhappy outdoors..
what is your opinion?
thanks again!!

Answer
Lisa,

I live in Louisville, KY and I know how the winters can get!!!!!

My bias is very strongly towards not letting any cats outside.  The statistics are that longevity is affected by being outside.  The average indoors cat lives 12-15 years, whereas the average outdoors cat lives 3-5 years, only!

Ot of doors, the biggest enemies of cats are larger predators, automobiles, and humans.

I would opt for finding a home to keep the kitten indoors!!!!!

Best regards... Norm.
