Ragdoll cat hair loss

Question
Hi Karen,
My male Ragdoll cat is 1 year now.  I had heard Ragdoll cats have low hair loss however it seems ours is contantly losing hair.  Not in patches but consistently all over.  We feed him quality food, always check his water etc but when you pick him up for a cuddle you end up covered in hair. He has been desexed.
Your comments and guidance would be much appreciated!
Natalie

Answer
Hi Natalie,

First off take him to the vet. There are a lot of diseases that can cause hair loss. There are also some parasites that will cause this. Next try changing his food. He may have an allergy to his food. Here's a good link about cat nutrition. http://catinfo.org/index.htm

What about fleas? Does he get flea treatments? Flea allergies can also cause hair loss. You may not see fleas because cats are really good at getting rid of those buggers. It takes just one flea bite though to set off an allergy. Try using Frontline for Cats for a month and see how he is. Check out all these things and see how he is. Let me know what you find out. Good luck.

Ciao, Karen
